Smock Looking Clothing Worn by Women Over Dress Around Legs
Do you love a smock dress? I do. Especially for those days when I either want to feel snug and warm, or I'm having a day when I just don't feel like wearing fitted clothes.
A smock dress is the answer my friends, and they are super for travelling in as well, because you can spread out and lounge about in them!
Outfit of the day inspiration
Wear a smock dress with heels, of some description, to give you a little height – especially is you're short like me!
If you're doing any kind of long haul travel, wear sneakers with your smock dress. The beauty of the full skirt on this style of dress means that you can tuck your legs up under the skirt, you can sit with your legs apart in an unladylike fashion in an airplane seat, stretch your legs out – and still be decent!
I'm wearing a beautiful peasant style smock dress – the Charlotte Round Neck Ethnic Smock Dress with Shivering Prints gifted.
I've teamed the Charlotte smock dress with some very old suede boots which are oh-so-comfy but have a nice size heel to give me some height to balance out the generous skirt. These trusty old ankle boots came from Green Cross in South Africa. I'm not even sure if you can get them anymore.
What is a smock dress exactly?
According to Wikipedia a smock-frock or smock is an outer garment traditionally worn by rural workers, especially shepherds and waggoners, in parts of England and Wales from throughout the 18th century. Today, the word smock refers to a loose overgarment worn to protect one's clothing, for instance by a painter.
A smock frock is traditionally made of heavy linen or wool and varies from thigh-length to around mid calf length.
I'll be wearing my smock frock in Autumn and Winter with pantihose, vest and petticoat, because it's one of those easy styles you can layer-up from the inside out without spoiling any lines.
A winter scarf, a hat and some dingle dangle earrings should do it! Roll on Autumn in Australia I say!
